Smart AgroCities

The Smart AgroCities proposal one of the modules that make up the project Cidades Vocacionadas (Dedicated Cities), which seeks to link the resources available in the region with the goals yet to be established, in order to create a smart city. Through qualitative and quantitative research, and also with aid of the local government and representatives of the organized civil society, the project identifies the strengths and weaknesses of each of the analyzed regions. It lists the indicators that can boost regional growth and seeks to strengthen it by generating regional assets.

Ivaiporã City

Ivaiporã, a city located in the North-Central Region of the State of Paraná, with its population estimated to be 32.000 inhabitants, had its colonization started in the 1940s. Ubá Territorial Society Ltd. - STUL was responsible for the territorialization of the region where the city is inserted, organizing the sale of rural lots, promoting the formation of urban centers, as well as structuring and consolidating the current territory. Having its lands considered as the most fertile in the country, Ivaiporã soon attracted the attention of pioneers who came from all corners of Brazil, implementing different southern and northern cultures there. Over time, the region has experienced harvesting cycles of pigs, wood and also the development of one of the most prosperous agriculture in the country. In the 1970s, it became a reference as the largest national producer of beans and cotton, among other crops, even being addressed as the Corn Capital of the World. With the presence of large cooperatives, the region today has enviable levels of agricultural production and productivity. Livestock, especially dairy cattle, plays an important role in the region's rural economy. Ivaiporã today is a regional hub, its commerce and the service sector are what stand out, followed by the agricultural sector.

Why Ivaiporã

Another extremely important point for Ivaiporã, and the State of Paraná as a whole, is that Bill 8804/2017 of the Constitution and Justice Commission of the Chamber of Deputies of PR, which provides changes in the National Road Plan, is awaiting to be approved by the Federal Senate. These changes constitute the creation of a new axis of integration between the States of Santa Catarina and São Paulo, crossing the central region of the State of Paraná, consisting of stretches of the state highways PR-323 and PR-445 – which are now intended to be federalized –, the coincident highways PR/BR-272, PR/BR-466, PR/BR-158 and the Federal Highway BR-373. It should connect Porto Charles Naufal (bordered by São Paulo) in the north to the City of Pato Branco (bordered by Santa Catarina) in the south. It is a region with intense agro-industrial activity, which contributes a significant portion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the State, especially the central-north portion, between Londrina and Guarapuava, passing through Ivaiporã. In addition to agricultural production, with emphasis on corn and soybean cultivation, there is also the textile, chemical, sugar-alcohol, furniture and wood industries. Therefore, there is a huge demand for brand-new road transportation to transport the things produced by all sectors of Paraná and its integration with important consumer centers in the State of São Paulo.

Central Region

The entire North Central Region of the State, which includes cities such as Astorga, Porecatu, Floraí, Maringá, Apucarana, Londrina and Faxinal, is also a reference in technology and innovation, given the national prominence of its higher education institutions, especially the State University of Maringá (UEM) and the State University of Londrina (UEL); and its Incubators and Technological Parks, represented by the Network of Incubators and Accelerators of Innovative Enterprises of Paraná - Re-Inova. This highlights the innovative profile that the region where the city of Ivaiporã is located has, justifying all the support and trust that has been deposited there over time by innovation support bodies, such as the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation - MCTI, the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development - CNPq, the Financier of Studies and Projects - FINEP, the Araucária Foundation, among many others.
